Ann Beeson, Esq.
Staff counsel at the ACLU National Headquarters in New York City, works as a litigator and online activist to promote and protect civil liberties in cyberspace. As counsel for the plaintiffs in ACLU v. Reno, she is a primary architect of the landmark case in which the Supreme Court declared the Federal Communications Decency Act unconstitutional. In addition to her work on the federal level, Ann Beeson has also fought and won the first two cases challenging state efforts to censor speech on the Internet: in New York State, American Library Association v. Pataki , and ACLU v. Miller in Georgia. She has also opposed the use of filtering software in public libraries and fought internet censorship by universities. The Los Angeles Times named her one of six "Stars of the Internet" for her work in protecting free speech, and she has been profiled by CNET as an "Internet Newsmaker". Before joining the ACLU, she worked for Human Rights Watch , advocating for the application of international human rights laws to the online community.
